Getting out in the Fort Myers sun for some exercise can help improve your health in a large number of ways. However, you need to ensure that you are using the proper techniques in order to avoid injury. If you are experiencing lower abdominal pain after exercise, this article can help you diagnose the cause, and avoid further discomfort and possible injury. Some possible causes of lower abdominal pain after exercise are:

  • Muscle Strain. If you are not warming up correctly, or if you are taking on exercise activities that are too intense for your current fitness level, you risk causing tears in the muscles of your abdomen. Make sure that you give your warm-up enough time, and don’t overdo exercises to avoid these painful injuries.
  • Cramps. Cramps can show up in any muscle in the body. Common causes include dehydration, mineral deficiencies, and reduced oxygen flow to your muscles. Reduce the number of repetitions of exercises like crunches to make sure that you are not overdoing it. Drink plenty of fluids before and during exercise.
  • Hernias are tears in the abdomen. You may experience pain or tenderness during exercise. Sometimes, a bulge is visible in the abdomen. Most hernias need to be repaired using surgery.

These two causes of abdominal pain are not directly related to exercise, but could get more severe after exertion:

  • Gall Bladder Attacks. If you are experiencing pain in the right side of your abdomen, you could be having a gall bladder attack. Nausea and gas are also common symptoms. If you suspect that you may have gallstones or another gall bladder condition, talk to your doctor.
  • Appendicitis. Appendicitis usually begins as mild pain in the lower abdomen, which gets worse over a period of hours or days. Your abdomen may also be swollen or tender to the touch. In almost all cases, your appendix will need to be surgically removed. This is a situation where you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
