Exercise Tips for IBD patients

Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, is a term for a group of disorders that affect your bowels, including both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These disorders often lead to uncomfortable side effects including diarrhea, cramps, energy loss, bloating, abdominal pain and incontinence. With these symptoms often occurring suddenly, IBD can make even healthy activities like exercise very difficult. Luckily, there are a several ways that you can continue to benefit from exercise without it being a painful or embarrassing experience.

  1. Plan regular bathroom breaks during your workout. For example, if you plan to work out for an hour, schedule breaks between exercises, or about every 15 minutes.
  2. Know where each of the restrooms are in your workout space. Whether in the gym or walking on a trail, it is important to know where the various restrooms are so that you can quickly and easily get to one when the need arises.
  3. Gauge your body. If you suffer from IBD in Ft. Myers, then you most likely know the warning signs of a flare up. On days where you feel symptoms of the disorder starting, don’t over-exert yourself. Stick to less intense exercises, or cut the total time of your workout down to prevent an accident.
  4. Think slower and uphill when using a treadmill. When your IBD symptoms include incontinence, keep your treadmill at an incline. Also avoid bouncing by walking instead of running or jogging.
  5. Perform more intense exercise from home. Strength training or exercises that involve bouncing or jumping can be done at home, where you can quickly reach a bathroom if necessary.

By following these steps, you not only benefit from the general effects of exercise, such as weight loss and increased strength and energy, but you may also see benefits towards controlling the symptoms of inflammatory bowel diseases through weight loss and better digestion. Before starting any new exercise routine, always consult your doctor to ensure that your plan meets your individual health needs and goals.
