TIF EsophyX for Acid Reflux

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, affects millions of Americans. Sufferers experience frequent heartburn or acid reflux, with many people having symptoms two or more times per week. Medications can provide short term relief of symptoms and minimally invasive surgical options may be able to fix the underlying problems that cause GERD. Now, a new surgical instrument known as the EsophyX may help these people find permanent relief from their GERD symptoms without the need for a single a incision.

The TIF (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) Procedure

TIF is a new procedure that uses an EsophyX instrument to repair the LES, the muscular valve between the esophagus and stomach that allows reflux to occur. The EsophyX is a specialized endoscope that is inserted into the patient’s mouth. The surgeon can then use the EsophyX to create and fasten tissue folds between the stomach and esophagus, tightening the LES and eliminating reflux.

The use of the EsophyX has been proven to be effective in treating GERD, eliminating heartburn in more than 85% of patients who underwent the TIF procedure. This incisionless treatment has a lower risk of complication than other treatment options and requires a shorter recovery time, with many patients resuming normal activities the same day.
